Abstract
Echinococcal cyst (hydatid disease) is a rare phenomenon in North America. This disease is caused by an infection with the tapeworms Echinococcus granulosisand Echinococcus multilocularis. It is predominantly seen in South America, North Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Most frequently, these cysts are found in the liver (50%-70% of cases) and may be found in the lungs (20%-30% of cases), bone, spleen, and nervous system. This case study describes the history of the disease, the patient’s clinical signs and symptoms, and sonographic appearance of this acquired disease.
