Helping extruder operators to independently and quickly solve problems in producing good quality plastic sheet has been the goal of a custom plastic sheet producer. Application of expert system technology has proved to be an effective way to implement a solution to the problems and challenges involved. The resulting product of the project, an intelligent advisor, offers asneeded, collaborative problem-solving assistance to operators. The knowledge acquisition phase of building the expert system has proved to be an effective method of preserving the intellectual capital of key personnel. An added benefit has been the education and training aspect of the computer system.
