Abstract
Heat transfer rolls are used in a multitude of processes within a wide range of industries. The process used to produce a product, and the product itself, dictate the roll's function. The roll Designer must determine the optimum internal design, the most reliable external coating and the proper surface finish in order to achieve the expected performance and, most importantly, the desired end product. There exists a hand full of roll designs that offer as many degrees of heat transfer efficiency. However, there exist numerous coatings that can be applied to the rolls, and hundreds of surface finishes that can be imparted on the coatings. This paper presents itself as a guide to the various designs of heat transfer rolls, the applications they are utilized in, and the analysis used to optimize the design for maximum heat transfer efficiency.
