Video Transcript
Hi, I’m Dr Stephen Brockmeier, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery in the Division of Sports Medicine at the University of Virginia, and Editor-in-Chief of the newest addition to the family of journals within the Medical Publishing Group of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Video Journal for Sports Medicine.
The Video Journal of Sports Medicine, or VJSM, is an open-access and peer-reviewed video journal publishing on topics of interest to orthopedic surgeons specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopy, primary care sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and others in the field. Topics of interest include the full spectrum of athlete care, including patient evaluation, nonsurgical and rehabilitation management strategies, injury prevention, surgical techniques, and return to play evaluation and decision making.
Unique in the current orthopedic journal landscape, the emphasis and focus of VJSM articles is the video presentation itself with overlying author narration, and accompanying written materials serving to complement the video. Each publication consists of a structured 8- to 10-minute video focusing on the topic, with background information, indications, outcomes, and technical details, pearls, and pitfalls. Written elements include a short, structured abstract; a transcript of the narration of the video; the author conflict of interest declaration; and a reference list. Accepted and published content to date includes both established and original surgical techniques, as well as patient evaluation, rehabilitation, return to play, and other nonsurgical treatment methods.
Our currently published open-access videos are being well utilized by practitioners, as seen by the growing number of views, downloads, and Altmetric data found on the site.
The journal will apply for PubMed indexing this year.
We have already worked with many fantastic authors to publish their videos and we appreciate their work, as well as the work of our Editorial Board completing the peer review.
I’d like to introduce you to one of our Editorial Board authors, Dr Michael Freehill, to share his take on VJSM.
Here’s a clip from his video titled, “The Evolution and Role of the Bursal Acromial Reconstruction.”
And, here’s a note from author Dr Sonnery-Cottet, who shares his interest in the journal and challenges you to surpass his top-viewed VJSM videos.
Dr Sonnery-Cottet’s publication is “Rationale and Surgical Technique of Ramp Lesion Repair Through an Additional Posteromedial Portal.”
In addition to our hardworking authors and reviewers, the journal has the support of the AOSSM and President Dr Michael Ciccotti.
VJSM currently has 97 international Editorial Board members and 19 partner societies representing a wide interest in the journal across orthopedic subspecialties and geographic locations. Many Editorial Board members are orthopedic surgeons, selected to cover all major areas of surgical expertise and to ensure geographic diversity, with a smaller number of individuals who have a background in physiotherapy, athletic training, and biomechanics.
Video submissions are invited in the following categories: surgical techniques, rehabilitation techniques, physical examination techniques, case series, and other treatment procedures. Published manuscripts include an 8- to 10-minute video, formatted abstract, video transcript, references, and disclosures.
Look for updates about VJSM by visiting the site at www.journals.sagepub.com/home/vjs and signing up for email alerts. You can also find VJSM on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, where every published article is individually promoted and shared.
But, most importantly, join us as a contributing author to share your insightful physical examination technique, novel surgical technique, impactful rehabilitation technique, a case report, or other treatment procedure!
