View of intensive care units nurses toward factors related to missed nursing

Abstract

Background

Missed nursing care is defined as aspects of care needed by patients that are completely or partially omitted or significantly delayed. Various factors may lead to missed care. Investigating factors related to missed care and their occurrence can prevent or minimize risks to patient safety. The present study was conducted to investigate factors related to missed nursing care in intensive care units.

Method

This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study sample comprised 255 nurses working in the intensive care units of Kerman University of Medical Sciences. Questionnaires regarding demographic characteristics and factors related to missed nursing care were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (independent t-tests and one-way analysis of variance) were employed for data analysis.

Results

The mean score of factors related to missed nursing care was 77.63 ± 63.13 (ranging from 20 to 80), which exceeded the average score of the questionnaire (30). The highest mean scores for factors related to missed care were observed for “lack of nursing staff,” “malfunction of equipment when needed,” and “emergency conditions of patients (e.g., deterioration of the patient's condition)” respectively. The lowest mean score was associated with “tension or poor communication with other aid and support centers” and “tension or weak communication within the nursing team.”

Conclusions

Based on the findings, providing mental and physical support, ensuring adequate facilities, and hiring skilled and experienced caregivers can help reduce instances of missed nursing care.
