Abstract
The management of women with chronic immune diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis, is often challenging. In September 2010, gastroenterologists, rheumatologists, dermatologists, and obstetricians convened for the second annual conference, “The Management of Women with Chronic Immune Disorders in the Era of Biologics.” Although the therapeutic options for these chronic diseases are similar across specialties, this meeting highlighted variations in patient management among the specialists present. Topics addressed included screening and monitoring, vaccinations, and specifically the use of the human papillomavirus vaccine, bone loss, the role of vitamin D, and care during pregnancy. The information presented at the meeting is summarized here to give the dermatology community a better understanding of how patients on similar medications are cared for in other specialties and to recognize areas of research needed in the field of dermatology.
