Abstract
The development, recurrence or exacerbation of some cutaneous viral infections, such as molluscum contagiosum, plantar warts and genital condylomata, in patients receiving treatment with tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) antagonists have been described in the literature. We report the development of multiple viral warts in a patient receiving the TNF-α inhibitor etanercept, and their resolution only after the discontinuation of the biologic therapy. TNF-α has an important role in the immune response to infection, including antiviral defense that is probably compromised by TNF-α inhibitors. Patients treated with TNF-α inhibitors may have a higher susceptibility to viral skin infections, and physicians should be aware of this potential complication.
