Abstract

This is the seventh edition of Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics Essential Review Articles. This year we are highlighting four excellent review articles. Two are Systematic Reviews and two are Contemporary Reviews. What is the difference?
A “Systematic Review” is a comprehensive and structured form of literature review that synthesizes all available evidence on a specific research question by using clearly defined, reproducible methods. Authors apply rigorous methods to minimize error and bias. This involves a thorough search protocol, critical appraisal, and analysis of studies to draw conclusions about the state of knowledge on the topic.
In Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics (and Foot & Ankle International) we also publish “Contemporary Reviews”. Similar to Systematic Reviews, Contemporary Reviews serve to educate the readership about conditions and/or procedures. Contemporary Reviews do not require the same rigorously formatted methodology as it is our intention to bring in expert opinion related to practice to Contemporary Reviews. Wherever possible we ask the authors to explain their preferred approach to treatment including tips and pearls that readers can use in their practice.
Both approaches have unique value. The current compilation in our seventh edition of Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics Essential Review Articles is ideal for both fellows-in-training and experienced senior foot and ankle surgeons. Everyone, regardless of background and experience, will learn at least one key point or technical tip from each article that will help them provide more nuanced care for patients.
In addition to this bound version, as with all papers published in Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics, each article is freely available online worldwide. Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics is the PubMed listed open access online journal of the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society and includes quality original research articles, systematic reviews, and case reports.
Please consider contributing to the Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics by submitting your original research for publication (mc.manuscriptcentral.com/fao) and furthering the mission of the society to improve lives through exceptional orthopaedic foot and ankle care.
