Abstract
This paper explores the laity’s perceptions regarding evangelism in Indonesia. Utilizing in-depth interviews with 26 churchgoers from various denominations, three primary themes emerge. From an ontological perspective, evangelism is understood as a duty, with salvation as its goal and love as the fundamental action. The methodological perspective highlights evangelism as the integration of deeds and words. The axiological perspective focuses on non-conversion evangelism while subtly maintaining hope for conversion. This paper argues that it reflects a strategic adaptation to the socio-religious complexities of their environment, aiming to balance the imperative of evangelistic duty with the practicalities of interfaith coexistence.
