Abstract
This paper reports on the retrospective views secondary school students have of an extra-curricular social studies program that they participated in during their upper elementary school years. High school seniors through sixth grade students participating in a series of group interviews discussed their thoughts, concerns, and ideas about social studies and the program. They also answered questions about social studies in their life today. The results of their responses indicated that patterns exist for community building in citizenship education. Suggestions are given for instruction in social studies at the elementary and middle school level.
