Abstract
A qualitative study reports how a seventh grade social studies teacher uses drama as a method of social studies instruction. The teacher uses both scripted plays and structured role play to engage students with social studies content. Narrative and action involve the students as the teacher defines concepts with the students and leads the students in the creation of mnemonics. The students use prediction to think critically about the events. The classroom develops a sense of community as a part of citizenship education.
