Abstract
E. C. Buck’s Report on ‘the daily life’ of cultivators in selected villages of North-Western Provinces (now U.P.) in 1879 gives details about the poverty of the peasants and labourers, the size of their rent burden and the debt incurred by them. It also underscores the unrelenting burden of work on the fields that the bulk of the rural population had to perform day in and day out.
