Abstract
The article studies a rural locality and communities in Purnea district (Bihar) as portrayed in a Bengali novel by Satinath Bhaduri, Dhorai Charit Manas, being the life-story of Dhorai, belonging to the Tatma tribe, with the time range of 1910 to 1942. The local response to Gandhi’s Non-cooperation Movement as described in the novel is first considered, followed by a discussion of the tribal-caste reality appearing from the novel, set side by side with the sociologists’ views of village and community.
