Abstract
Surgery protocols have evolved to address general anxiety and trauma but neurodivergent children may be underserved. Neurodivergence is a term that describes variations in what is considered typical development and functioning. This paper reviews current thinking on neurodivergence and challenges often faced by a child and their family in a medical setting including communication and co-occurring physical and psychiatric health issues. Strategies for nurses to improve the pediatric operating room (OR) experience are outlined with an in-depth case study and general suggestions for best practices. Children, regardless of neurodevelopmental status, deserve care with dignity that honors their differences.
