Abstract
Adverse childhood experiences profoundly impact the development and overall health of children that carry into adulthood, affecting immune function, inflammation, and mental well-being. Medical procedures can be traumatic. Trauma-informed care is an essential framework utilized in a variety of healthcare settings to address early trauma, utilizing supportive interventions to mitigate long-term health consequences. The implementation of trauma-informed care principles such as safety, trust, and collaboration work to address the complex needs of children and families effectively. Pediatric surgical nurses are encouraged to utilize interventions aimed at establishing an environment of care that prioritizes autonomy, safety, active listening, and shared decision-making to avoid re-traumatization and promote healing. These principles profoundly affect patients and families by promoting healing.
