Abstract

A WORD OF WELCOME
On behalf of the Scientific Committee and the Association for Laboratory Automation, we'd like to extend a hearty welcome to all the attendees of smallTalk′99: The Microfluidics and Microarrays Conference. Microtechnologies are transforming many fields of science and are having a far-reaching impact from drug discovery to patient care, to environmetal and process monitoring. The potential commercial markets for these micro-based systems are estimated to exceed $20 billion per year. We have seen the tremendous interest at our other conferences, LabAutomation and EuroLabAutomation, build over the past several years and believe it is< time to organize a special conference in this area.
smallTalk brings together leading international scientists, exhibiting companies, and an educational program under the guidance of a distinguished scientific committee into a dynamic 3 day event. This conference has already received interest from around the globe and we are especially pleased to have you attend this inaugural edition of smallTalk. We trust your experience at smallTalk′99 will be stimulating as well as fascinating.
The high quality of our scientific program is result of the efforts of our scientific committee with the generous support of our sponsors. We sincerely wish you a pleasant stay at the Hilton La Jolla and a productive smallTalk′99 meeting.
