Abstract

Presented by the Association for Laboratory Automation and the Medical Automation Research Center at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia
This workshop will be a comprehensive yet focused examination of new data management technologies specifically designed for point-of-care testing. Recent developments in whole blood testing, computer networking, the internet, and instrument remote control has resulted in the ability of hospitals and commercial laboratories to provide point-of-care testing at prices which compete with the central laboratory. As laboratories move closer to the patient bedside, there will be a shift in pre-analytical specimen handling nearer to the patient and away from the central laboratory. Automated point-of-care testing will not only provide affordable laboratory services, but will also reduce turnaround time to less than five minutes for most common analytes. At the MARC workshop, we will also explore why point-of-care testing will soon be more affordable than centralized testing in consolidated laboratories. Furthermore, we will examine some recent technologies which demonstrate why point-of-care is the fastest
We invite you to join us for this comprehensive workshop on Automated Point-of-Care Testing. This one-day workshop will feature the leading point-of-care data management technologies and reviews of sites which are successfully putting it to use. The affordability of point-of-care testing improves when one implements it as part of an overall laboratory automation program. However, point-of-care automation and data management technologies are relatively new and poorly understood. Discussion will focus on technologies which provide immediate reductions in cost and turnaround time. We look forward to seeing you!
At Automated Point-of-Care Testing, learn how:
Decentralized testing will allow commercial laboratories to enter the inpatient critical care business
Point-of-Care testing may reverse the laboratory consolidation trend
Point-of-Care testing can be expanded without a staff increase
Point-of-Care testing will increase in physician's offices and outpatient clinics yet be managed by a central laboratory
