Abstract

Asynt
DrySyn Parallel Synthesis Kits
Asynt has updated the design of its products for parallel synthesis to share standard parts (inserts) for reaction tube, vial, and round-bottom flask-based reactions and now also can be upgraded to a parallel reaction station using standard round-bottom flasks, by using the appropriate DrySyn MULTI inserts. In this configuration, facilities can be added such as directly driven stirring with the Asynt Vortex stirrer system. Available in a choice of configurations, the Asynt DrySyn SnowStorm system provides controlled cooling and heating for subambient parallel chemistry without the need for jacketed reaction vessels or ice baths and is now available in new sizes. Operating with a suitable chiller/circulator, a DrySyn SnowStorm system provides accurate, stable temperature control down to −50 °C and up to +150 °C for crystallization studies, screening polymorphs, and more.

FEI
Tecnai Femto UEM
According to FEI, the new ultrafast electron microscope (UEM) is the first system to commercialize UEM technology pioneered by Nobel Laureate Professor Ahmed Zewail at the California Institute of Technology. It enables exploration of ultrafast events and processes that occur at the atomic and molecular spatial scale over time spans measured in femtoseconds (10–15 s). These include processes such as the absorption of light energy and its transformation into heat or mechanical changes (photoactuation) and the crystallization or recrystallization of materials, including large biological molecules for structural analysis.
Tecnai Femto is a member of FEI’s Tecnai family of transmission electron microscopes (TEM). It can accommodate ultra short laser pulses that stimulate a brief “flash” of photoelectrons from the electron source and a precisely timed pulse of laser energy directed at the sample as a stimulus. To achieve the highest temporal resolution when observing reversible processes, the Tecnai Femto UEM operates in stroboscopic mode, in which a large number of precisely timed flashes, each containing as few as a single electron, build up a representative image of the sample at a given delay between stimulus and flash. The delay is then adjusted incrementally and another image acquired, resulting ultimately in a sequence of images much like the frames of a motion picture. For irreversible processes, such as fractures, the instrument can be operated in the single-pulse mode with many electrons in the pulse, but unlike the femtosecond single-electron mode, the time resolution reaches picoseconds to nanoseconds because of Coulomb repulsion. The instrument can also be operated in conventional continuous-beam TEM mode.

Genevac
Rocket 4D Dryer
This fully automated, compact system for automatic drying or concentration of large volumes with no user interaction uses proprietary vacuum technology to suppress solvent bumping and foaming, which are the problems associated with sample loss when using large-scale rotary evaporators. Rocket 4D comes as standard with a single, 5 L 316 stainless-steel vessel for drying or concentrating product. This has detachable handles and is easily lifted into and out of the evaporator. Access to the dried or concentrated product in the vessel is very easy. Dried products can be scooped out or, where enhanced user protection is needed, redissolved while the vessel is still in the system. Liquid products can be easily drained via a drain port in the side of the rotor, using a dedicated pouring stand.
Users wishing to dry volumes larger than 5 L require the Autofeed option, which enables the Rocket 4D to draw in product from the user’s own external supply. The Rocket 4D controls product feed, drying, and the discharge of condensed waste solvent without any external intervention. The autofeed system has an integrated rinse circuit that enables dried products to be automatically redissolved in a small volume of solvent at the end of the process. Alternatively, the same circuit can be used under manual control for solvent exchange by selecting a different solvent for redissolve.
The PTFE feed tubing is easily detached for cleaning or replacement, and the vessel can be readily cleaned, wiped, inspected, and even put in a dishwasher. The Rocket 4D also includes powerful cold traps that maximize solvent recovery, protecting the environment and improving drying of samples.

Greiner Bio-One
EASYstrainer Cell Sieve
The sieve is considered ideal for preparing single cells for flow cytometry and to separate individual cells after organ digestion as part of the primary cell extraction process. According to Greiner Bio-One, when filtering cell suspensions, it is particularly important that the sterile filter material is not contaminated through accidental contact. For this, the EASYstrainer features a circumferential mantle surface and handle fitted directly on the sieve. Handling is also made easier by the sieve’s structured surface. In addition, the blister packaging ensures reliable, aseptic removal of sieves from the pack.
The EASYstrainer design features a venting slot between the collection tube and the attached cell sieve. Air in the tube can escape through this slot during filtration. Filtration is quick, and overflow is avoided. EASYstrainer does not require filtration material at the side. This prevents the accumulation of filtration liquid between the sieve and tube and thus the associated risk of contamination.
EASYstrainer is suitable for all standard 50 mL tubes and is available in mesh widths of 40 µL (green), 70 µL (blue), and 100 µL (yellow).
