Abstract

This issue of Workplace Health & Safety contains a Continuing Nursing Education Module for 1.0 contact hour of continuing nursing education credit will be awarded by AAOHN upon successful completion of the posttest and evaluation.
A certificate will be awarded when the following requirements are met by the participant: (1) Participant logs on to the AAOHN LMS website at www.aaohn.org/education/online-learning-center and enrolls in the course ($10 members; $15 non-members); (2) The completed posttest and course evaluation are entered online at http://www.aaohn.org by December 2023; (3) A score of 75% (6 correct answers) is achieved by the participant.
Upon completion of this lesson, the occupational health nurse will be able to:
Define the term presenteeism as it relates to agricultural workers
Understand the epidemiological versus productivity loss approaches to studying presenteeism among agricultural workers
Identify the characteristics of agricultural workers that might result in presenteeism
The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc., an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. is additionally approved as a CNE provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing (#CEP9283).
Contact hours received for successful completion of the posttest and evaluation may be used for relicensure, certification, and re-certification.
Presenteeism:
Can result in pain, depression, and poor work ability Is common globally at rates of 30%–90% Is the act of showing up at work ill Can result in productivity loss, spread of disease, and increased risk of accidents All the above
Agricultural workers make up approximately _____ of the global workforce. Fill in the blank.
10% 27% 39% 45%
Presenteeism can be studied from an epidemiology or productivity loss perspective. The difference between the two approaches is:
One relies on worker self-report and the other evaluates productivity losses One uses several standardized instruments and the other utilizes statistical analyses One focuses on the environment of work and the other on the management structure They both take a similar approach using 21 possible standardized instruments.
According to the authors, what characteristics of agricultural workers may increase the risk of presenteeism:
Work is generally inside and not subject to unpredictable environmental conditions Work is generally temporary Agricultural workers often are not qualified for other types of work b. & c.
Research in presenteeism in agricultural workers is:
Common in the occupational health literature Found in the business school literature due to its effects on productivity Generally scarce and difficult to find Can be found in the human assessment literature
The two studies identified in this systematic review:
Yielded almost exactly the same results Suggested a higher rate of presenteeism among male workers Were productivity loss studies Showed wildly divergent rates of presenteeism and focused on different populations
Similarities between the two studies included:
Workers were exposed to repetitive tasks and uncomfortable work postures Large numbers of “easy to replace” workers Workers were exposed to challenging weather conditions All the above None of the above
The results of this systematic review:
Are based on worker self-report and are therefore subject to memory bias Are generalizable to all agricultural workers Must be interpreted with caution a. & c.
Underreporting of presenteeism in one of the studies analyzed in this systematic review could be due to:
Fear of losing their job and being deported Fear of negative co-worker reactions Distrust of the researchers The “hard-to-reach” nature of this population
Among agricultural workers in North Carolina, reports of presenteeism were associated with:
Certain job tasks A poor safety climate Workers with less than 3 years of experience None of the above
