Abstract
As the number of Black and Brown pre-K–12 students continues to rise, ensuring that schools are safe and inclusive learning environments is crucial. Educational and systemic inequities persist, creating barriers to success for marginalized student populations. School counselors are uniquely positioned as leaders to drive change, promote antiracist practices, and challenge both written and unwritten oppressive policies. This conceptual article aims to equip school counselors with a framework that supports their role as antiracist advocates. It emphasizes the importance of taking actionable steps, beyond recognizing racism and inequities, to actively address these issues within schools. Specifically, the article seeks to answer the following question: How can school counselors effectively engage in antiracist advocacy? To answer this question, we developed the Antiracist School Counseling Advocacy Framework through a review of literature on antiracism, school counseling, and advocacy. The framework outlines clear action steps for school counselors, including engaging in self-reflection, identifying the level of advocacy needed, empowering students to challenge inequities, and demonstrating the courage to implement systemic change. By using this framework, school counselors can take deliberate and measurable actions toward creating equitable school environments. This framework empowers school counselors to become transformative leaders who advocate for antiracist practices and foster liberating educational experiences for all students.
