Abstract
Using data from the California Department of Justice, the California Department of Public Health, and the American Community Survey, this research examines the association between COVID-19, racial demographics, and anti-Asian hate crimes in California at the county level. Binary spatial autoregressive models reveal that counties with higher COVID-19 case rates have a higher likelihood of anti-Asian hate crime occurrence. Also, anti-Asian hate crimes are more likely to occur in contexts where there is a dominant White majority with a substantial Asian presence. Findings suggest the necessity of understanding anti-Asian hate crimes as racial stigmatization and interracial conflict.
