Abstract
Stress is a significant issue for all practicing urologists. Its origins are manifold and may be generated at home or in the work environment. Those that arise during a urological career tend to be most intense during training and become an increasing burden, which can lead to burnout, early in young consultants’ lives. Understanding the inflexibility of time, and its effective management are key strategies to minimising the impact of stress, its deleterious effects on the work/life continuum and harmful effects on wellbeing, during the relatively short time span of a consultant career. Effective communication, not overcommitting, and appropriate planning can minimise stress, but engaging with professional support, when required, can reduce the risk of burnout.
