Abstract
This case study explores how TOAST, a UK-based lifestyle brand, has seamlessly integrated digital technology with traditional handloom weaving to enhance design capabilities, production efficiency, and global market reach while preserving cultural heritage. Established in 1997 by Jessica and Jamie Seaton, TOAST is celebrated for its commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and ethical practices. Collaborating with artisans worldwide, TOAST produces high-quality handwoven textiles and garments. Digital technology has addressed challenges such as labor-intensive processes, limited design capabilities, and restricted market access. Despite initial resistance from artisans and the need for training, TOAST overcame these obstacles through workshops and transparent communication. Key issues addressed include resistance to change, training, authenticity, market expansion, and sustainability. Technological integration includes computer-aided design (CAD), digital archives, e-commerce platforms, and blockchain technology, leading to enhanced design, increased productivity, expanded market reach, and strengthened sustainability efforts. Success stories like TOAST’s collaboration with Indian artisans have resulted in acclaimed collections. Future prospects involve exploring AI-driven design tools, virtual reality for customer engagement, and further sustainable innovations.
