Abstract
The case invites readers to analyse the implications of maintaining an on-premises Hospital Management System (HMS) versus adopting a cloud-based HMS, considering data security, integration capabilities, and the overall impact on hospital operations. This teaching case explores the strategic dilemma faced by Salem Gopi Hospital (SGH), based in Salem, a tier 2 city in Tamil Nadu, India. The hospital contemplates transitioning from an on-premises HMS to a cloud-based HMS following the acquisition of its HMS on-premises software, Fanta, by Alto Technologies. The case details the historical context of SGH, its growth trajectory, and the pivotal role of technology in enhancing operational efficiency and patient care. Mr. Ashok, the executive director of the hospital, grapples with concerns regarding data privacy, service continuity, and the potential for operational disruptions amidst increasing software customisation requests and staff turnover. Through this case, learners will engage in critical decision-making processes, assessing risks and strategising for effective technology adoption in healthcare settings.
