Un trattamento derivativo rivolto alla eliminazione della componente fluida costituisce un utile provvedimento terapeutico che, nella forme completamente o prevalentemente cistiche (60%) di craniofaringioma, può servire ad ovviare molto rapidamente, anche se in maniera temporanea e palliativa, a gran parte dei problemi causati dal tumore.
Il drenaggio intermittente è utile per un controllo temporaneo unito ad eventuali trattamenti intracavitari; la ventricolo-cistostomia è potenzialmente provvista di un effetto autonomo e di più lunga durata.
