Abstract
The Work Ethic originated during the Reformation Period as a way to reach heaven and improve one’s life on earth. During the Industrial Revolution, it became the driving force behind the striving for ever-greater profits. Hard work led to the improvement of one’s situation. Gradually, however, employees began demanding the opportunity for more than financial improvement. They wanted to participate more in workplace decisions. As a result, The Work Ethic no longer suffices. It should be replaced by the Development Ethic, first proposed by the Ancient Greeks who said that the primary purpose of life should be to develop and enjoy one’s positive potential to the fullest possible extent, and then to use that potential to help improve society.
