Observation of discrepancies between values of intrinsic PEEP (PEEP) as measured by conventional methods and by the Siemens 300 ventilator led us to investigate the basis for the differences.
Method
We observed the ventilator method of determining PEEP; and compared ventilator-determined values to conventionally determined values.
Results
Comparison allowed quantitation and prediction of errors in ventilator PEEP. CONCLUSION: PEEP; can be seriously underestimated by ventilator-generated measurements that fail to correct for the effect of patient-system compliance.
