Abstract
We helped design and test a new cannula, the ESP Infant Cannula, for delivery of low-flow oxygen to infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared oxygen saturations measured by pulse oximetry in 6 oxygen-dependent infants during equal periods of use of the new cannula and a traditional cannula. Saturation values were compared by Student's t test. Observer nurses completed a questionnaire about each system at the close of each observation period. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in oxygen saturation values obtained, and observer nurses believed that the new cannula was easier to apply and to remove and allowed easier feeding. No differences were seen in infant tolerance. CONCLUSION: The new cannula may make care of oxygen-dependent infants easier, without compromise of oxygenation.
