Abstract
We investigated the use of the Olympic Trach-Button as an interim airway following tracheostomy tube removal. Our evaluation of 163 patients over a 12-month period during 1979-80 showed that the Olympic Trach-Button afforded the tracheostomized patient the opportunity to re-establish an unobstructed airway and at the same time allowed the patient to speak. Our findings and experiences revealed that the Olympic Trach-Button could be used successfully and without difficulty if proper criteria for placement, management, and removal were met. Of the 163 patients who were evaluated, only 15 (9.2%) needed buttons replaced by cuffed tracheostomy tubes, and 13 patients were discharged home with the button in place. We have found the Olympic Trach-Button to be a useful adjunct in maintaining the tracheostomal site.
