Abstract
Members of the Department of Physiology at McGill University (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) are engaged in the systematic study of the mechanisms involved in the control of breathing. Among the topics under investigation are carbon dioxide retention in patients with chronic bronchitis and emphysema, the effects of anesthetics and other drugs on the respiration of both adults and infants, and the development of the respiratory system from birth to adulthood. Basic knowledge of the control mechanisms of breathing is needed for the prevention and treatment of respiratory disease.
