A nomenclature for describing mechanical ventilator curves is presented. The respiratory cycle is divided into four major components (baseline pressure, assist effort, peak pressure, and inspiratory effort), and the values of these components are used in a shorthand system of describing any ventilatory pattern. A precise and simple way of communicating ventilatory curves, this method describes exactly what would be meant, for example, by "SIMV 10/8/30/7."
