Abstract
Weaning often involves a "trial and error" method that may end up being a "do or die" technique. It is not necessary to make respirator weaning a risky experience for the patient. Proper preweaning evaluation, with correction of various factors, is important. Certain criteria that indicate adequate inspiratory muscle strength and oxygenation capability should be checked. Once the respiratory care team has determined that the patient is ready to be weaned, the use of proper techniques helps to insure a successful result.
