AASPT Annual Meeting Returns to In-Person (June 13-14, 2024, Las Vegas)

The American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy (AASPT) will host its Annual Meeting in Las Vegas on June 13-14, 2024 - its first in-person Annual Meeting in several years.

“Our goal is to make this the premiere event for sports physical therapists who want to learn cutting-edge education and research that you can apply to your practice immediately,” AASPT President Mike Reinold said in his recent letter to the AASPT membership.

The event will feature experts in Sports Physical Therapy, including Kevin Wilk, PT, DPT, FAPTA, world-renowned surgeon Arun Ramappa, MD, and more.

In addition, the conference will focus on the future of sports physical therapy by hosting an Emerging Sports PT Research Session with posters, presentations, and awards, as well as Resident networking.

In all, the AASPT Annual Meeting will offer attendees 15 hours of CEU credit, unmatched educational opportunities, and so much more.

Highlights From the 2024 AMSSM Annual Meeting in Baltimore

The 2024 AMSSM Annual Meeting took place earlier this year in Baltimore, MD, where sports medicine physicians showed up in droves to set multiple milestones for the conference. More than 2700 in-person attendees participated in the meeting, while more than 400 virtual attendees helped establish a new standard for the Annual Meeting with nearly 3200 total participants.

Jennifer Malcolm, DO, served as Program Chair for the meeting, and Rebecca Myers, MD, FAMSSM, assumed her role as President of AMSSM during the State of the Union. In addition, Selina Shah, MD, FAMSSM, played a vital role during the conference as the Moderator of Moderators.

During the meeting, James Barrett, MD, FAMSSM, was named the recipient of the 2024 Founders’ Award, which is bestowed when AMSSM leadership determines that a member exemplifies the best that a sports medicine physician can be and do.

AMSSM Past President James Moriarity, MD, FAMSSM, gave this year’s Hough Memorial Lecture titled “The Effects of Muscle Type on Performance,” and AMSSM 2nd Vice President and USOPC CMO Jonathan Finnoff, DO, FAMSSM, delivered the Presidential Keynote address, providing “Leadership Pearls for Sports Medicine Physicians.” Harriet Hopf, MD, and Leo Hopf, MBA, also combined to give the Presidential Keynote/Anderson Memorial Lecture on “Physician Leadership and Professional Development.”

We want to thank the 2024 Program Planning Committee, the hundreds of volunteers and the thousands of attendees who helped make this year’s conference the largest one yet. Preparations are well underway for next year’s Annual Meeting in Kansas City, and we hope to see everyone then!

AMSSM also presented the following awards during the 2024 Annual Meeting:

Best Overall Research Award - Erin Hammer, MD, MPH - Effectiveness of helmet add-on shell devices to prevent sport-related concussion in high school football players.

Harry Galanty Young Investigator Award - Meredith Ehn, DO, DPT - The NICA Injury Surveillance System: details from 119,098 student-athlete-years of injury data.

NCAA Research Award – Rajiv Jain, MD - Assessment of stimulated blink reflex and symptoms over time in collegiate athletes with sports-related concussion .

Community Advocacy Award – Benjamin Toebbe, BA.

Best Overall Case Presentations – A cold hand during a Wisconsin Summer by Adam Cordum, MD; and Collapse of a special operator: exertional illness or more than meets the eye? by Jordan Lyons, MD, MBA.
