Highlights From the 2023 AMSSM Annual Meeting in Phoenix

AMSSM members showed up in full force to the 2023 AMSSM Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, setting an attendance record in the process. With >2700 in-person attendees and another >400 virtual attendees, the meeting surpassed 3000 total attendees for the first time ever.

Melissa Novak, DO, served as Program Chair for the meeting, and Marci Goolsby, MD, FAMSSM, stepped into the role of President of AMSSM during the State of the Union. Anyone who would like to watch Dr Goolsby’s Incoming Presidential Message can find it on AMSSM’s YouTube channel.

During the meeting, Stephen Simons, MD, FAMSSM, received the 2023 Founders’ Award, which is bestowed when AMSSM leadership determines that a member exemplifies the best that a sports medicine physician can be and do.

Current Board member David Olson, MD, FAMSSM, provided this year’s Hough Memorial Lecture titled “Sports Medicine in 2023 - Although There may be no Parades, it Sure is an Amazing Ride,” and Feranmi Okanlami, MD, MS, served as the Presidential Keynote Speaker during the opening session on Health Equity.

Before the conference, the AMSSM Collaborative Research Network (CRN) conducted the 2023 Research Summit on Justice, Equity, and Inclusion. Dr Okanlami also served as a Keynote Speaker for the event, along with Nicole Kaniki, MD, and NCAA champion wrestler Anthony Robles.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s record-setting conference, and we hope to see everyone during next year’s Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland!

Best Overall Research Award: Andrew Watson, MD, MS - Race and Socioeconomic Status Influence the Benefits of Returning to Sports During COVID-19.

Harry Galanty Young Investigator Award: Nelson Boland, MD - Sleep Extension and Consistency Improve Athletic Performance in NCAA Division I Collegiate Athletes.

NCAA Research Award: Sherilyn DeStefano, MD - Screening College Athletes for Sexual Violence: Current Trends and Athletes’ Opinions on Best Practices.

Community Advocacy Award: Rock Vomer, DO, DPT, and Emma York, DO.

Best Overall Case Presentations: Stephanie Clark, DO, MS, for her case titled “Rib Pain in a Runner”; and Jacob Holtz, DO, for his case titled “Compressed for Time.”

National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA)

Register to Attend NATA 2023 On-Demand

If you were unable to attend the 74th NATA Clinical Symposia and AT Expo in June, you can still register to attend the NATA 2023 On-Demand. Taking place August 1 to October 31, NATA 2023 On-Demand features select sessions recorded during the NATA convention in Indianapolis. Registrants can earn up to 20 continuing education units (CEUs) as well as view the NATA Foundation Free Communications Posters and access the AT Expo exhibitor list. Use the PDC This Reporting Year and Beyond

2023 is a reporting year, and it’s never too early to start earning your required CEUs. The NATA Professional Development Center offers courses that cover a range of topics ATs encounter daily. PDC visitors can filter courses by level, domain, and course format. In addition, NATA members receive free CEU credits that they can use in the PDC through December 31.
