AMSSM Awards $300K Research Grant to Study Cardiac Outcomes in Athletes, Including Those Affected by COVID-19, and Partners With American Heart Association
The AMSSM Collaborative Research Network (CRN) announced the recipients of the 2020 AMSSM CRN $300K Research Grant. Drs Jonathan Drezner, Kimberly Harmon, and Aaron Baggish will serve as coprincipal investigators for their research project titled “Outcomes Registry for Cardiac Conditions in Athletes (the ORCCA Study): A Prospective, Multisite Research Study.”
The long-term objective of their project is to establish an outcomes registry for competitive athletes diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. Initially, the investigators launched a national registry using a cohort of National Collegiate Athletic Association athletes afflicted with COVID-19 to address urgent clinical questions related to the impact of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) on cardiovascular pathology and the risk of myocardial injury.
The American Heart Association has also signed on to collaborate with AMSSM and project coinvestigators to accelerate this critical new research initiative studying cardiac conditions in athletes.
AMSSM Releases Consensus Document on Youth Sports Specialization
The AMSSM CRN recently published a consensus document regarding “Defining a Research Agenda for Youth Sport Specialization in the USA: The AMSSM Youth Early Sport Specialization Summit,” which was co-published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine and the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine.
This statement is a result of the AMSSM CRN Youth Early Sport Specialization Summit in April 2019; it provides a broad summary of the existing literature, gaps and limitations in current evidence and identifies key research priorities to help guide researchers conducting research in this area. The statement aims to improve the quality and relevance of research on youth sport specialization and to assure that opportunities for healthy and safe sport participation continue for all youth.
