American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)
AMSSM Releases Position Statement on Mental Health Issues and Psychological Factors in Athletes
AMSSM has released a position statement titled “Mental Health Issues and Psychological Factors in Athletes: Detection, Management, Effect on Performance, and Prevention.” This statement discusses how members of the sports medicine team, including team physicians, athletic trainers, and mental health providers, work together in providing comprehensive psychological care to athletes. It specifically addresses psychological factors in athletes, including personality issues and the psychological response to injury and illness.
The statement also examines the athletic culture and environmental factors that commonly affect mental health, including sexuality and gender issues, hazing, bullying, sexual misconduct, and transition from sport. Specific mental health disorders in athletes, such as eating disorders/disordered eating, depression and suicide, anxiety and stress, overtraining, sleep disorders, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, are reviewed with a focus on detection, management, the effect on performance, and prevention.
AMSSM Awards $150,000 “Stephen I. Katz Bridge to R34” Research Grant
AMSSM and its Collaborative Research Network (CRN) are pleased to announce the recipients of a $150,000 research grant, with the goal of preparing a team of investigators for a competitive submission of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) R34 Clinical Trial Planning Grant and then to an NIH U01 Clinical Trial Implementation Grant via the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.
Mederic Hall, MD, and Ruth L. Chimenti, DPT, PhD, will serve as co–principal investigators for their research project titled “Safety of Ultrasound-Guided Tenotomy for Achilles Tendinopathy and Feasibility of a Standardized Ultrasound Imaging Protocol, a Multi-Site Study.” A team of investigators will work closely with the CRN Leadership Committee on this project over the next 2 years, and the CRN looks forward to sharing results with the membership once they become available.
“Our research team could not be more excited to partner with the CRN on this Bridge to R34 grant and subsequent pursuit of an NIH-funded clinical trial,” said Dr. Hall, the study’s co–principal investigator. “We hope to answer questions that will directly inform clinical decisions by our members treating the very common and challenging diagnosis of Achilles tendinopathy.”
