Abstract

American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)
REACH for the Future of Sports Medicine at the 2018 AMSSM Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL
On behalf of the 2018 Program Planning Committee, we invite you to the 27th AMSSM Annual Meeting in sunny Orlando, Florida, on April 24-29, 2018. The meeting theme is “REACH: Reaching Up, Reaching Out, Reaching Ahead for the Future of Sports Medicine.” Our program offers educational opportunities for our entire membership from private practice to academic researchers and from students through seasoned sports medicine veterans. We’ve also left time to enjoy the “happiest place on earth” and connect with friends and colleagues.
Our Collaborative Research Network (CRN) is fully operational and we will be updating the membership on all the work that is being done to bring researchers together; we have planned a really fun (yes, research can be fun) “Shark Tank” session where your votes will help in determining a research grant winner that will be announced during the meeting! We continue to build on previously successfully educational offerings, including hands-on sports ultrasound, ECG training, the return of the economics preconference, new offerings for the private practice physician, expanding sports trauma management education, and faculty development sessions.
Additional highlights of the 2018 meeting include the following:
• A thought-provoking session on performance-enhancing drugs featuring former Tour de France and Olympic cyclist Tyler Hamilton
• NFL CMO Dr. Allen Sills discussing issues regarding pain management in professional football
• Practical musculoskeletal sessions with renowned experts in foot/ankle including Drs. Ned Amendola (AOSSM exchange) and Patrick McKeon as well as a session on hip disorders in athletes featuring Dr. Thomas Byrd
• Ultrasound imaging pearls for foot/ankle and hip with guest lecturers Drs. Lev Nazarian (AIUM exchange) and Johan Michaud
• Controversial topics in nutrition including the high-fat/low-carb debate with Dr. Peter Brukner and Jeff Volek, as well as a discussion of the role of the microbiome in health and sports performance
• New advances in concussion diagnosis and management featuring Drs. John Leddy, Jon Patricios, and other world experts
• Regenerative medicine session, including an invited lecture on advances in cell therapy by Dr. Lisa Ann Fortier
• International traveling fellow Dr. Hilde Berge from Norway presenting on medical challenges in the Paralympian/disabled athlete
• Hot topics in physical activity and exercise medicine, including discussions on medical education, training load monitoring and optimization, challenges in the elite Paralympian, as well as high-intensity exercise and cardiovascular health with Dr. Barry Franklin (ACSM exchange)
Please join us in Orlando. As Walt Disney said, “Whatever we accomplish belongs to our entire group, a tribute to our combined effort.” If we all reach out and work together, we can realize another of Disney’s famous quotes, “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” To view the complete program and register for the Annual Meeting, visit amssm.org.
AMSSM Awards $300,000 Research Grant for Concussion Recovery Study
The AMSSM and its CRN are pleased to announce the recipients of the AMSSM CRN $300,000 Multi-Site Research Grant, which supports quality, multisite research to address key priority areas within the field of sports medicine. John Leddy, MD, Christina Master, MD, and William Meehan III, MD, will serve as co–principal investigators for their research project titled “Sub-symptom aerobic exercise therapy to improve recovery from acute sport-related concussion: A randomized controlled trial.”
Their study aims to determine whether subsymptom threshold aerobic exercise within 1 week of SRC speeds recovery in adolescents compared with rest/education. The study will also determine whether the degree of early exercise intolerance is associated with time to recovery and the incidence of prolonged post-concussive symptoms.
The group consists of AMSSM clinicians and researchers at various locations, including the University at Buffalo (Dr. Leddy), Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (Dr. Master and Matt Grady, MD), and Boston Children’s Hospital (Dr. Meehan). Other key members of the team are Rebekah Mannix, MD, MPH (Boston Children’s Hospital), and Andrew W. Mayer, MD (The Mind Research Network and the University of New Mexico).
The team of investigators will work closely with the CRN Leadership Team on this project over the next 2 years, and the CRN looks forward to sharing results with the membership once they become available.
Fellows Selected for 2018 AMSSM Traveling Fellowship to Scandinavia
AMSSM has selected Leonardo Oliveira, MD, and Jason Zaremski, MD, to serve as junior traveling fellows for AMSSM’s 2018 International Traveling Fellowship Program tour to Scandinavia. Drs. Oliveira and Zaremski will join AMSSM Founder and Past President John Lombardo, MD, who will serve as senior traveling fellow for the May 16-31, 2018, tour.
The traveling fellowship program offers an opportunity for academic exchange and clinical immersion for sports medicine physicians to teach and learn sports medicine on a global level. During the first half of the exchange, International Visiting Fellow Hilde Moseby Berge, MD, PhD, will spend 2 weeks in the US and serve as a keynote speaker at the 2018 AMSSM Annual Meeting and visit sports medicine centers in South Carolina, Virginia, and Massachusetts. The second half of the tour will feature AMSSM traveling fellows visiting Sweden, Norway, and Denmark and include presentations at sports medicine conferences in Norway and Sweden.

Sports Physical Therapy Section (SPTS)
Special Interest Group News
SPTS is proud to offer its members the opportunity to focus on issues of specific areas of practice in the form of our Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Every member of SPTS may participate in any SIG or any number of SIGs! Simply login to your member profile and specify the SIG or SIGs you choose.
Benefits of SIG membership include access to dedicated forums, collaborative discussions with your peers, access to special articles, and even help with a difficult patient issue. SPTS has 13 SIGs open only to members of SPTS.
In cooperation with the Golf Special Interest Group of the SPTS, Adaptive Golf Academy, and the Georgia State Golf Association, the first “Adaptive Golf as Therapy” seminar was conducted in Marietta, Georgia, on October 28, 2017. The program’s objective was to develop partnerships between physical therapists and PGA professionals to enhance lives through golf, with focus on those with special needs.
The Physically Challenged Athlete Special Interest Group of SPTS is an active and engaged group passionate about the needs of the physically challenged athlete. In 2017, this SIG sponsored journal clubs, “sport of the month” features, and lively conversation on their SIG’s forum. The Physically Challenged Athlete SIG’s biannual newsletter is posted on the SPTS website, and notification is sent to SIG members to inform them of recent and upcoming events and other information relevant to the Physically Challenged Athlete SIG. A goal of this SIG is to foster professional connections to promote working with physically challenged athletes and/or adaptive sports programs.
Team Concept Conference 2017 Features Military Hero
Team Concept Conference 2017 included an inspiring keynote presentation from Kevin Flike, a former Green Beret and wounded American veteran. Flike was injured during his second deployment to Afghanistan on September 25, 2011. During an intense firefight, Flike was shot in the lower abdomen, fracturing his hip, losing part of his colon, and causing severe damage to his femoral nerve. With little hope of recovering function in his leg, Flike underwent an experimental surgery in which a sensory nerve graft was used to reconstruct his damaged femoral nerve. After numerous surgeries and thousands of hours of time spent in physical therapy, Flike has regained function in his lower extremity and noted that he has even progressed to running over 7 miles. Flike gave credit to his physical therapy team for continuing the work of his surgical team and allowing him to regain function.
State Representative Network Expands
Since becoming its own committee in the Section, the goals of the State Representative Network include monitoring state legislative activities and serving as a liaison between the SPTS and its members. Each state’s representative within the network provides continued contact with the APTA House of Delegates and the APTA State Chapters. This provides the SPTS with an up-to-date assessment of the legislative actions of each state as well as local state events. Representatives maintain contact with their respective delegate and state chapter and submit brief quarterly reports outlining relevant issues. Greg Alnwick, State Representative Network Team Coordinator, now maintains a network of 47 representatives monitoring the issues important to the APTA and the SPTS. For more information about participation, contact Greg Alnwick at galnwick@ne.rr.com.
