AMSSM Announces $300,000 Multisite Grant to Address Sports Medicine Research Priorities
As a kickoff to the 26th American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, the AMSSM Collaborative Research Network (CRN) announced $300,000 in funding to support 1 or more quality, multisite research proposal(s) to address key priority areas within the field of sports medicine.
The CRN has developed a request for proposals (RFP) that aims to capitalize on promising research ideas in 1 of 5 identified priority areas or another topic area of interest with strong potential to make an immediate impact in the field of sports medicine. The 5 priority areas of research include the following: bone health, cardiac screening, concussion, sports specialization and athletic performance, and use of ultrasound within sports medicine. This RFP, funded by AMSSM and the AMSSM Foundation, is open to all AMSSM members, who are encouraged to connect with collaborators both within and outside of the AMSSM. The CRN will award 1 or more proposals up to $300,000 for a maximum of 2 years. The RFP is intended as seed money to provide data for major external grants to follow. In alignment with the mission of the CRN, proposals must include 2 or more sites. Letters of intent are due June 30, 2017, and invited full proposals are due November 1, 2017. AMSSM members can view the Research/CRN section of the AMSSM website for details (must be logged in to view RFP).
Katherine L. Dec, MD, Installed as 24th AMSSM President
Katherine L. Dec, MD, was installed May 11, 2017, as President of the AMSSM during its 26th Annual Meeting at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, California. Dr Dec is a sports medicine physician and professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. She is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and sports medicine. “I am honored and humbled to be able to serve as president for this organization,” said Dr Dec, who is the first PM&R-trained physician to serve as AMSSM President. “Dr David Hough and Dr Doug McKeag, my fellowship directors, inspired me to join in 1994, and it has been a huge part of my career journey.”
Prior to her role at VCU, Dr Dec worked at a hospital-based clinic, in an orthopaedic practice, in a rehabilitation hospital, and previously started a solo private sports medicine practice. She serves as head team physician at Longwood University and as a team physician for Richmond area high schools. She is the medical director for the Richmond marathon and assists Dr Jeff Roberts with a sports medicine fellowship. She was instrumental in the development of the sports medicine program for the residents at VCU PM&R and the sports and performance lead at the new VCU Neuroscience and Orthopedics Wellness Center in Glen Allen, Virginia.
AMSSM Releases Position Statement on Fellowship Standards of Excellence
The AMSSM has released the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship: AMSSM Proposed Standards of Excellence position statement. Primary care sports medicine fellowship programs are designed to provide comprehensive training in preventing and treating musculoskeletal and nonmusculoskeletal conditions in athletes and active individuals. A high-quality education should be the goal of all fellowship programs. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) provides the foundation of minimum standards to accredit training programs. However, there are currently no criteria established to describe benchmarks for quality improvement or standards with which to achieve excellence. The purpose of this position statement is to outline a vision with targets for fellowship programs to aim for the highest level in their educational training program.
The position statement is concurrently being published by the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine and the British Journal of Sports Medicine and can be viewed by visiting the AMSSM website. Irfan Asif, MD, served as the lead author of the position statement, and AMSSM members Mark Stovak, MD, Tracy Ray, MD, and Amanda Weiss-Kelly, MD also served as coauthors.

National Athletic Trainers’ Association (Nata)
Nearly 100 members of the NATA from 30 states descended on Congress on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, for the organization’s annual Capitol Hill Day in an effort to educate members of Congress about the athletic training profession and request support from their senators for S.808, the Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act. The legislation, which would protect athletic trainers and other sports medicine professionals who travel out of state with an athletic team to provide care, ultimately ensures that the medical care of athletes is not jeopardized. If the bill passes in the Senate, it will go to the President’s desk for final signature to make it a law. The legislation, passed in the U.S. House of Representatives as H.R.302 on January 9 of this year, clarifies medical liability rules for athletic trainers and other medical professionals to ensure they are properly covered by their malpractice insurance while traveling with athletic teams in another state.
NATA has been recognized by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) with a 2017 Gold Circle Award in the website category. The Gold Circle Awards competition is the premier association marketing, membership, and communications award that recognizes excellence, innovation, and achievement in association/nonprofit marketing, membership, and communications programs. This year’s competition received more than 172 entries across 11 categories, including convention/meeting campaign, member retention campaign, print magazine, and video.
