American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)
AMSSM Announces Collaborative Research Network Leadership Team
The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine is excited and honored to announce the members of the newly appointed CRN Leadership Team, which will help guide and grow AMSSM’s recently established Collaborative Research Network.
This group of individuals is tasked with establishing the foundation of the research network, enhancing the quality and visibility of sports medicine research (with the aim of improving patient care), and increasing the opportunities for our membership to engage in various aspects of research. The members and their positions on the team include: Anthony Beutler, MD, Chair; Alison Brooks, MD, MPH, AMSSM Research Chair; Irfan Asif, MD, AMSSM Board Member At-Large; Steve Marshall, PhD, Non-Member At-Large; Aurelia Nattiv, MD, Senior At-Large Representative; Dan Herman, MD, PhD, Junior At-Large Representative; and Andy Peterson, MD, MSPH, Junior At-Large Representative.
Additionally, this group will interact closely with and rely on the expertise and guidance of the CRN Oversight and Advisory Panel. This panel consists of a select group of leaders in the field of sports medicine, including: Past Presidents Jon Drezner, MD, Chair; John DiFiori, MD; Fran O’Connor, MD, MPH; Jim Puffer, MD; Margot Putukian, MD; and Jeff Tanji, MD. The Oversight and Advisory Panel will be asked to provide valuable insight and experience to the CRN Leadership Team as it determines the direction and future goals of the CRN.
International Sports Medicine Traveling Fellows Journeyed to Italy
John Wilson, MD, and Andrew Peterson, MD, served as the two Junior Traveling Fellows for AMSSM’s International Traveling Fellowship program tour to Italy, which took place November 29 to December 13, 2016. Drs Peterson and Wilson accompanied AMSSM Founder Rob Johnson, MD, who participated as Senior Traveling Fellow for the tour.
The Traveling Fellowship Tour began with participation in the Italian Federation of Sports Medicine National Congress in Rome December 1-4, 2016, and offered a chance to present at the meeting. The tour also included visits to sports medicine centers, starting in Rome and concluding in Milan.
The program provides an opportunity for academic exchange and clinical immersion for sports medicine physicians to teach and learn sports medicine on a global level. The purpose of the program is to encourage academic interchange, share research, and explore common clinical interests among international sports medicine leaders.

National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA)
The NFL Foundation, in collaboration with NATA, Gatorade, the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society, and the Korey Stringer Institute, will fund a new AT Grant Program, designed to increase the number of high school football players with access to an athletic trainer. The pilot program aims to improve the health and safety of student athletes at up to 150 public high schools beginning next fall. It is available to public high schools with interscholastic football programs and minimal or no access to an athletic trainer in Arizona, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Oregon. This program is an expansion of the athletic trainer initiatives developed and implemented by the NFL Foundation and its partners over the past 2 years.
The eighth Youth Sports Safety Summit, hosted by NATA and the Youth Sports Safety Alliance, will be held on March 7, 2017, in Indianapolis. With the theme, “Less Risk, More Reward: Emphasizing Safety and Encouraging Success,” attendees will learn from medical experts about the preexisting conditions and practice habits that can put athletes at greater risks for conditions such as sudden cardiac arrest, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), or heat stroke.
