Abstract

American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)
AMSSM Partners With AAOS, NATA, and AOSSM in Support of Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act of 2015
AMSSM encourages you to reach out to your members of the US Congress to encourage them to support S689/HR921, companion bills titled “Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act of 2015.” In a follow-up to the 2014 efforts, these bills were reintroduced in early 2015 and would help clarify that sports medicine professionals who travel outside their primary licensed state to provide care for athletes will be covered by their medical malpractice insurance. The bills, which enjoy bipartisan support, stipulate that health care services provided by a covered sports medicine professional to an athlete, athletic team, or team staff member in a secondary state outside that professional’s state of licensure will be covered by the appropriate medical malpractice insurance provider. Currently, in most states, sports medicine professionals who travel outside of the state to provide care for athletes are not covered by their medical malpractice insurance—largely because of jurisdictional issues. By removing legal ambiguity, these bills would allow sports medicine providers to engage in the treatment of injured athletes across state lines without taking on unnecessary professional and financial risk.
AMSSM to Present Workshop at 2015 ECOSEP Meeting
As part of a partnership exchange with the European College of Sport and Exercise Physicians, AMSSM will be presenting a clinical workshop during the combined 4th Congress of ECOSEP/7th Muscletech Network Workshop in Barcelona, Spain, October 7-9, 2015. The conference will take an extensive look at muscle and tendon research. AMSSM First Vice President Matt Gammons, MD; Second Vice President Katherine Dec, MD; and Board Member David Berkoff, MD, will represent AMSSM and present during the workshop.
Reporting Catastrophic Sports Injuries
AMSSM encourages you to report catastrophic sports injuries through the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research (NCCSIR) site at https://www.sportinjuryreport.org/. NCCSIR tracks and conducts research on severe sports injuries and illnesses in the United States. Decisions about rule changes and equipment changes are informed by these data.
AMSSM and NATA Cohost Collaborative Solutions for Safety in Sport Meeting in New York City
The first Collaborative Solutions for Safety in Sport Meeting took place in March at the NFL Headquarters in New York City. The meeting focused on the implementation of current health and safety best practices in secondary school athletics. All 50 state high school associations participated along with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Immediate Past President Dr Chris Madden opened the meeting with NATA President Jim Thornton. AMSSM members presenting at the meeting included Drs Jon Drezner, Cindy Chang, Verle Valentine, Kathy Dec, and Josh Bloom. More than 20 AMSSM members were in attendance, most representing their state’s sports medicine advisory committees.
AMSSM 2015 Traveling Fellows Head to South Africa
Drs Alison Brooks and Jim MacDonald were chosen as the 2015 Junior Traveling Fellows for the AMSSM International Traveling Fellowship Program tour to South Africa. Drs Brooks and MacDonald will join AMSSM Founder and Past President Doug McKeag, MD, who will serve as the second Senior Traveling Fellow for the October 8-22 tour. The Traveling Fellowship will culminate with participation in the South African Sports Medicine Association Annual Meeting, October 19-22, and a chance to present at that meeting. This program was made possible by the generous support the AMSSM Foundation received from DJO Global. AMSSM wishes to thank DJO Global for its educational support of this exchange of ideas and knowledge by world leaders in sports medicine.
