Abstract

American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)
AMSSM Launches Patient-Focused Website
The AMSSM is pleased to announce the launch of SportsMedToday.com, a patient-focused website that will serve as a free, comprehensive health care resource for competitive athletes and the active individual. The website will provide extensive content to assist athletes, parents, coaches, and other health care professionals in making well-informed decisions. The website content is written and developed by AMSSM experts.
Visitors to the site will find a searchable database with a variety of sports medicine topics arranged by sport, injury/illness, and body part, with topics being added and updated continually throughout the year. Additionally, PDFs are available for healthcare professionals and others to print off and share according to their outreach needs.
AMSSM Announces 2014 Traveling Fellows
The AMSSM recently launched the inaugural International Traveling Fellowship program tour, an academic and research exchange and clinical immersion initiative for sports medicine physicians to teach and learn sports medicine on a global level.
In March, AMSSM hosted its first International Traveling Fellow, Peter Brukner, OAM, MBBS, an internationally recognized sports medicine clinician and researcher from Melbourne, Australia. Dr Brukner visited programs around the United States for a 2-week period prior to presenting at the Annual Meeting.
Drs Irfan Asif and Chad Asplund have been chosen as AMSSM’s first 2 Junior Traveling Fellows for the July 9-23, 2014, tour to Australia. They will join our first Senior Traveling Fellow, Dr Jim Puffer, on the tour to Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney.
This program was made possible by the generous support the AMSSM Foundation received from DJO Global.
US Senate Bill Introduced to Address Across State Lines Issue
U.S. Senators John Thune (R–South Dakota) and Amy Klobuchar (D–Minnesota) introduced this bill in April. The legislation is a companion bill with HR3722, clarifying that sports medicine professionals who travel outside their primary licensed state to provide care for the athletes will be covered by their medical malpractice insurance.
Currently, in most states, sports medicine professionals who travel outside the state to provide care for athletes are not covered by their medical malpractice insurance since it is beyond their licensed area to practice medicine. The bill would allow sports medicine providers to engage in the treatment of injured athletes across state lines without taking on great professional and financial risk.
You can help by familiarizing yourself with the bill and contacting your Congressional representatives to ask them to become cosponsors of the bill: http://beta.congress.gov/members.
