Abstract

National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA)
Georgia is the latest state to adopt recommendations from the NATA-spearheaded Inter-Association Task Force on Preseason Heat-Acclimatization Guidelines for Secondary School Athletics. In just the past year, Connecticut, New Jersey, Texas, and North Carolina have followed this trend. The Georgia High School Association (GHSA), Georgia Athletic Trainers’ Association, National Federation of State High School Associations Foundation, and NATA Research & Education Foundation in part funded a University of Georgia 3-year study that looked at the rate of exertional heat illnesses in 25 high schools throughout the state. The study was initially presented at the NATA Annual Meeting in June 2011 and to the GHSA football rules subcommittee in January 2012. This research led GHSA to consider the NATA task force guidelines.
American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM)
The AMSSM held its 21st annual meeting (Atlanta, Georgia) in April 2012. An impressive group of international sports medicine physicians presented at the conference, including Roald Bahr, Martin Schwellnus, Jon Patricios, Per Holmich, Giuseppe Filardo, and Karim Khan. Mark Safran delivered the AOSSM exchange lecture on labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement.
AMSSM Awards
At the annual meeting, 2011-2012 President Cindy Chang presented Craig Young with the 2012 Founders Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sports medicine community as a clinician and educator. This year’s research award for best overall research was presented to William Meehan for his presentation “A Murine Model of Multiple Mild Concussive Brain Injuries and the Effects of Recovery Time on Cognitive Outcome.” University of Washington Sports Medicine Fellow Jessie Fudge received the Harry L. Galanty Young Investigator’s Award for her study “Cardiovascular Screening in Young Athletes: A Prospective Study Comparing the PPE Monograph 4th Edition and Electrocardiogram.”
Jonathan Drezner Installed as New AMSSM President
Dr Chang passed the presidential torch to 2012-2013 President Jonathan Drezner. Dr Drezner became a member of AMSSM in 1999. He serves as an associate professor of family medicine and associate director of the sports medicine fellowship at the University of Washington. Dr Drezner recently chaired the Summit on ECG Interpretation in Athletes.

Osteoarthritis Grant Available
AOSSM, in partnership with Genzyme Biosurgery, is pleased to again offer a research grant to fund investigations related to early osteoarthritis (OA) and/or prevention of OA progression. This grant reflects the growing recognition of the importance of osteoarthritis within sports medicine and orthopaedics. The program is an outgrowth of the society’s conferences on postjoint injury OA held in December 2008 and 2010, and it underscores Genzyme’s long-standing commitment to osteoarthritis research and therapy. The grant will be for $50 000 to support a laboratory/basic science. Proposed studies need not relate specifically to sports injuries and should also have broad applicability to OA in the general population. Projects involving viscosupplementation will not be considered for either grant.
Applications will be reviewed for their potential impact on the field, the quality of study approach, and ability of investigator and site(s) to conduct and complete the proposed research. The principal investigator or at least one coinvestigator on all applications must be an AOSSM member who has completed his or her training. It is expected that grantees will submit the results from their funded study to AOSSM for podium presentation and to AJSM for publication.
The submission deadline is August 1, 2012. The award notice will be made on or after October 15 with a start date of January 1, 2013. Inquiries can be directed to Bart Mann, AOSSM director of research, at
To begin the application process, please review the guidelines specific to this grant and complete all information as described at www.sportsmed.org/researchgrants. All information should be submitted in one PDF document to Bart Mann, AOSSM director of research, at
