STOP Sports Injury Initiative Campaign Launched
AOSSM is pleased to announce that the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, National Athletic Trainers’ Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, and SAFE Kids USA have officially endorsed the STOP Sports Injuries campaign. Additional organizations are being added every week, and we continue to gain momentum and support for this important endeavor. In addition to the organizational supporters, we have received corporate support from DePuy Mitek.
There are many ways that sports medicine professionals, coaches, and parents can become involved in the campaign and throughout the year:
Link your organization’s Web site to www.STOPSportsInjuries.org. Become a fan of STOP Sports Injuries on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter. Provide the educational materials to parents, coaches, and athletes in your area and in your practice. Give a presentation to a local community coach or parent group. Establish an event to talk about youth sports safety and why it is important. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.
All the information on the Web site is free and easily downloadable. Twenty-two tip sheets, posters (2 versions), prescription pads, stickers, tattoos, special lapel pin, podcasts, and videos are available, with more resources and materials being regularly added. AMERICAN MEDICAL SOCIETY FOR SPORTS MEDICINE (AMSSM)
AMSSM Partners in STOP
The AMSSM will be a charter affiliate organization with the STOP Sports Injuries campaign. The campaign is being launched by the AOSSM and is an educational initiative aimed at coaches, parents, athletes, and medical care providers. Goals of the campaign include serving as an educational resource for sports medicine physicians, advocating safe sports and activity participation, and fostering relationships among sports medicine professionals.
AMSSM–Andrews Institute Ultrasound Course
The Andrews Institute, in Gulf Breeze, Florida, is partnering with the AMSSM June 11 to 13 to offer a musculoskeletal ultrasound course. The Andrews Institute has traditionally offered an outstanding course in the spring and summer. Watch for details on our Web site.
AMSSM Physicians at the Olympic Games
The AMSSM is proud of its members who served on the recent US Winter Olympic Medical Team: Jim Moeller, who was chief medical officer; Jolie Holschen, who was team physician for women’s ice hockey; and Mike Noyes, who was team physician for short-track speed skating. Thank you all for your service.
Fourth Edition of the Preparticipation Physical Examination Monograph
Don’t forget that the fourth edition of the Preparticipation Physical Examination monograph will be released in May. AMSSM’s David Bernhardt and Bill Roberts are editors. The edition will have a new section on athletes with special needs and will provide updates on controversial topics, such as cardiac workup and medicolegal issues.
NATIONAL ATHLETIC TRAINERS’ ASSOCIATION (NATA)
As part of an ongoing effort to reduce the catastrophic athletic injuries and illnesses among young athletes in the United States, NATA spearheaded the Alliance to Address the Youth Sports Safety Crisis in America, with the support of 29 other leading health care and sports organizations. The group’s January 12, 2010, summit in Sacramento, California, was designed to raise awareness about youth sports safety and promote legislation to improve health care for young athletes. In addition to NATA, numerous groups compose the alliance, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
To help reduce the incidence of and expense from chronic back pain, NATA and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons launched a public service announcement campaign in March 2010. Featuring volleyball players on the beach, the announcement headline reminds readers that “back pain never takes a time out.” The campaign kickoff coincided with National Athletic Training Month, in March, which promoted the theme “Sports Safety Is a Team Effort.”
The NATA 61st annual meeting and clinical symposium, scheduled June 22 to 25, 2010, in Philadelphia, features numerous educational opportunities with hands-on experiences. The Johnson & Johnson feature presentation on June 24 will focus on preventing sudden death during sports and physical activity. For more information, visit www.nata.org/annualmeeting.
