Advance Team Physician Course
The 2009 Advanced Team Physician Course will be held December 3–6 in Phoenix, Arizona, at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort. This course is jointly sponsored by the AMSSM, ACSM, and AOSSM. The course is “designed to identify areas of concern or controversy in the management of high caliber athletes in a team setting” and will include an update on the latest issues affecting the team physician. This is an excellent course to attend if you have experience as a team physician and desire more in-depth knowledge of issues surrounding this role.

Images Now Available in Online Library
Image searching is now available through AOSSM’s Online Library. A separate area of the library has been established that allows users to search and download images for use in AOSSM presentations and other research activities. The AOSSM’s Online Library is a free, unique, Web-based search engine that allows individuals to customize and save searches on relevant sports medicine terms and by the AOSSM curriculum. Users have access to resources such as AJSM, Sports Health, meeting abstracts, and online meetings and other AOSSM resources. To access the library go to www.sportsmedlibrary.org.

NATIONAL ATHLETIC TRAINERS’ ASSOCIATION (NATA)
Endowment Created to Support Concussion Research
The NATA Research and Education Foundation announced the creation of an endowment to support concussion research. Formed by leading concussion experts Robert Cantu, MD, FACSM, and Kevin Guskiewicz, PhD, ATC, FACSM, the vision is to provide resources for young scholars with expertise in concussions to conduct research. Helmet manufacturer Xenith has agreed to donate in perpetuity $1 for the sale of every X1 football helmet to the endowment. The purpose of the endowment is to sustain funding for efforts to bridge the gap between sport concussion research and clinical practice for athletic trainers working with their patients on a daily basis. A $1 million long-term goal has been established. Once funded, annual income through the endowment mechanism will allow for ongoing research to be supported perpetually.
Excerpts From the NATA Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposium in San Antonio
The World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy hosted the 2009 World Congress on June 15–17. The forum was sponsored by NATA with the theme “Global Perspectives in Athletic Health Care.” More than 80 attendees from various countries discussed topics at the forefront of international sports medicine today, including emergency planning, functional rehabilitation, and injury prevention. Acclaimed speakers from the United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, and the United States, presented findings. Attendees also gathered for the International Education Summit to compare the state of the athletic health care professions across the globe.
NATA inducted 5 athletic trainers into its Hall of Fame. Nominated and selected by their peers, all inductees have been certified NATA members for at least 25 years. Their professional excellence, volunteer service and community outreach have distinguished them for this honor. Inductees include Michael Ferrara, PhD, ATC, FNATA (University of Georgia); Joe Iezzi, MS, ATC, PES (Downingtown High School West in Pennsylvania); Thomas E. Koto Jr, ATC, LAT (Intermountain Orthopaedics in Boise, Idaho); Bill Lyons, MS, ATC (University of Wyoming); and Chad Starkey, PhD, ATC, LAT, FNATA (Ohio University).
Two members joined the NATA board of directors. Russ Richardson, ATC (Whitworth University) will oversee district 10 (covering Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon in the United States and British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan in Canada). Martin Baker, ATC (Elon University) takes over as director for district 3 (covering North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia).
