Analysis of Caregiver Burden in South Asian Families in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area: Insights for Social Practice

Abstract

This study examines the factors that influence elder caregiver burden in South Asian families in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. A sample survey of 118 households with an elderly person receiving care was conducted. Data were gathered from primary caregivers via an interview survey. The results suggest that role demand is a significant factor in understanding the phenomenon of caregiver burden in multigenerational South Asian households. As role demand increases, the amount of caregiver burden increases. However, factors such as Asian cultural norms and size of support network tend to reduce the level of role demand Implications for social service programs and policy are discussed.
