Ring contraction of tricycle 25²² in the presence of perchloric acid and benzoic acid anhydride gave the spiroketal 29 in 95% yield. The reaction passed through protonation (structure 26), ring contraction (structure 27), water addition (structure 28), and finally benzoylation to 29.
