Abstract
Play is essential for preschool children's normal development and emotional wellbeing. Because play is sensitive to environmental conditions, an abusive or neglectful home environment can adversely affect the child's play development. Although the detrimental effects of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse and neglect are well-documented, few studies have investigated the play of abused children. This paper aims to critically examine the literature and describe the reported effects of child abuse and neglect on preschool children's play. This analysis highlights the need for early childhood professionals to be better informed about the effects of child abuse on young children.
