Abstract
What distinguishes humans from other animals is their ability to think, to reason and to wonder. Infants try to make sense of life's complexities from the moment they are born. Educators play a vital role in keeping young children's wondering alive. If children are merely supplied explanations they will soon learn to defer to adults or to become satisfied with simplistic reasons for highly complex issues. They will carry these answers into adulthood.
Thus the role of the educator is one of moving young children towards solving their own problems through active exploration, discovery and reflection.
