Abstract
The present ACHS Accreditation standards for the medical record service have been developed over some 15 years. However, review of the first edition of the standards, issued in 1976, indicates that the intent has changed little over the years, apart from considerably greater emphasis on staff appraisal and development and on quality assurance. Throughout this 15 year period, the intent of the standards may be summarised in terms of requirements relating to content, accessibility, security and quality assurance.
