This article aims to review the literature, which surrounds the psychological effects of hand injury. It looks at the implications of injury for an individual's function and body image, and makes suggestions on how this influences therapy. The article concludes by considering some recent advances in hand surgery. It emphasises the increasing need for psychological and ethical issues to be addressed, as technology improves.
